June 20th, 1785. Mr. Burke gave notice, in the House of Commons, of his design to move an impeachment against Hastings:
April, 1786, exhibited articles of impeachment.
April, 1787, Impeachment voted by the House.
Feb. '88. The trial commenced in the House of Lords: and.
April 23d, 1795, (seven years afterwards, and ten years after the first movement), judgment of acquittal was pronounced.
The trial cost the British Government upwards of 100,000 pounds, and the accused £71,000, sterling money; equal to about $450,000, and $315,000. In this era of economy, we trust that neither these delays nor these expenditures will find a parallel in the prosecution of Judge Peck.—Fredericksburg Arena.
