HIT AND RUN VICTIM FOUND

In a telephone communication with the Riverside county sheriff's office at Indio at 2 p'clock this afternoon it was learned that O. M. Ruzkman of San Bernardino was arrested by officers at about 9 o'clock last night in Indio, on a charge of driving while intoxicated. Examination of his automobile showed that he had struck someone somewhere along the road coming from the valley.

He is being held on suspicion of having caused the death of the man found near Westmorland this morning.

Early this morning the body of a man was found along Highway No. 99 about a mile west of Westmorland by B. A. Henry who immediately notified the authorities of his discovery.

Coroner Bert Underwood after an examination of the body and the road where it was found stated this morning that he is positive the man was struck by a hit and run driver as there was a deep gash in his forehead and marks along the road showed the body had been dragged about 30 feet.

There were also many pieces of broken glass on the pavement, indicating that a headlight lens was broken when the man was struck.

This theory was further substantiated when particles of glass were found in the dead man's clothing.

Just before noon, word was received at the sheriff's office that two men coming from the valley were arrested in Indio early this morning for drunk driving. The right fender of their car was broken and the glass of the headlight was missing. There were also marks of corduroy trousers in the dust of the fender and the man killed near Westmorland was wearing corduroy trousers at the time of his death.

The message from Indio did not give the names or descriptions of these two men but county officials feel certain that they are the ones responsible for the accident. Undersheriff Clark with Harold Gillett, deputy sheriff, left for Indio about 11 o'clock to bring back the men and the car.

A search through the dead man's clothing revealed no marks of identification. He had but 13 cents in his pocket. The body was taken to the Thornton funeral parlors in Brawley.
