The Washington steamer reached New York from Southampton in about thirteen days, bringing passengers G. P. R. James the novelist and the Hungarian Count and Countess Dembinski, who was an aid of Kossuth's and escaped confinement in Turkey with his wife seeking refuge in this country. The steamer carried an immense cargo of valuable goods from Germany and France, over 500 tons of silks, laces, satins, jewelry, watches, rich dresses, shawls, etc., valued at over one million dollars.
