Railroads in Chili.—The corps of Engineers which left this country a year ago, under the charge of Allan Campbell, Esq., of Albany, to construct a railroad in the northern part of Chili, to connect the rich mining region of that country with the coast, have made the most satisfactory progress in the work. The route for the entire distance between Caldera and Copiapo (fifty miles) has been laid out, the levelling and grading have been completed for the distance of twenty-five miles, and nine miles of the track have been laid and are in working order. It is expected that the track for the twenty-five miles which have been graded will be laid by the month of July next, and that the entire work will be completed by the end of the year.

Mr. Campbell has also been charged by the Chilian Government with the survey of the route for a railroad between the port of Valparaiso and Santiago, the capital of Chili. The rugged nature of the country presented obstacles apparently insurmountable to the construction of such a work, but the survey is being vigorously prosecuted under the immediate direction of Alexander Campbell, Esq., and a line unexpectedly favorable has been obtained for the first fifty miles from Valparaiso. It is now confidently believed that a feasible route will be obtained for the entire distance between the two cities.

The Government and the capitalists of Chili manifest the highest interest in the progress of this work, and seem determined to carry to completion an enterprise which is destined to develop immensely the resources and to enhance the rapidly-increasing prosperity of that thriving republic.
