Full Text
Mr. Campbell has also been charged by the Chilian Government with the survey of the route for a railroad between the port of Valparaiso and Santiago, the capital of Chili. The rugged nature of the country presented obstacles apparently insurmountable to the construction of such a work, but the survey is being vigorously prosecuted under the immediate direction of Alexander Campbell, Esq., and a line unexpectedly favorable has been obtained for the first fifty miles from Valparaiso. It is now confidently believed that a feasible route will be obtained for the entire distance between the two cities.
The Government and the capitalists of Chili manifest the highest interest in the progress of this work, and seem determined to carry to completion an enterprise which is destined to develop immensely the resources and to enhance the rapidly-increasing prosperity of that thriving republic.
