Very late from France—direct.
The sch'r Matchless, capt. Kelly, arrived at this port yesterday in 32 days from Bordeaux, having sailed the 17th ult. with a full cargo of brandy, silks, &c. and brings a satisfactory confirmation of the release of the American vessels which had arrived in the ports of France from the United States, subsequent to the 2d of November last, on condition of their loading with certain productions of the French empire, such as silks, brandy, &c. and the American vessels in the port of Bordeaux were loading, and would shortly sail for their ports of destination. We also learn that Massena passed thro Bordeaux on the 4th of June, on his way to Paris. No news of any recent battle in Spain or Portugal. Capt. Kelly informs, that no account of a war between Russia and France had reached Bordeaux. The French papers by this arrival are to the 12th of June, but they do not contain an article of moment. It appears from one of the French papers, that Marshal Massena had arrived at Paris, either to account for his military conduct, or to assist at the ceremonial of the baptism of the king of Rome, which took place on the 9th of June. The Moniteur contains a letter from Massena, announcing a brilliant sortie from the garrison of Almeida; but all the particulars of this transaction, known in France, are collected from London papers to the 25th of May, and these are not published in any of the papers we have received; which are principally occupied with the names of the archbishops, bishops, and dignitaries of the empire, who had reached Paris to join in the baptismal celebration of Young Napoleon. The Matchless brought out dispatches for government, which, it is feared, will have the intended effect upon the negociation now going on between Messrs. Monroe and Foster. Letters give a faint hope that the French duties on American produce, except tobacco, were to be reduced one half.
