Full Text

Cuba Reported Sunk.
The bogus telegram printed by one of the Atlanta papers, and reprinted by the Times-Union yesterday, to the effect that the island of Cuba could not be found by the captains of three vessels that had returned to Savannah, caused a great deal of talk and uneasiness in Palatka yesterday. Judge Vertrees started out to get up a colony to locate with him on one of the highest mountains of East Tennessee, and a number of others said if the telegram was true that they were going to leave Florida for a higher land. An old sea captain explained the matter so far as the captains' reports were concerned, even if they so reported. He says that a very slight earthquake shock will sometimes cause the chronometers to vary so much that the captain cannot tell where he is, and if they missed sighting Cuba it was because the vessels were out of their course. This is a very plausible theory, but we do not know anything about it.
