VICTORY LOAN DRIVE
A NUMBER OF NEWARK WOMEN PRESENT
INSPIRATIONAL MEETING OF STATE WORKERS
HELD YESTERDAY AT THE PLAYHOUSE
Yesterday a most inspiring meeting of workers for the Victory Loan was held at the Playhouse in Wilmington. It was well attended by men and women workers from all over the state.
Those from Newark were Miss Anne Lossinger, Mrs. J. P. Cann, Mrs. W. L. Bonham, Miss Lawina Long and Miss Elinor Harter.
The meeting was under the auspices of the Women's Committee and consisted of a morning session presided over by Mrs. Otho Nowland, chairman for New Castle County who presented the State chairman, Mrs. Henry Ridgely of Dover. Mrs. Ridgely gave a most inspiring address telling what had been accomplished in the past and what was to be accomplished in the coming campaign.
Other speakers were Mrs. Henry C. Jump and Mrs. J. C. Hutchinson of Philadelphia. Mr. I. L. Clark, chairman of the speaker's bureau of Philadelphia, Richard Morton, associate director of the Victory Loan and Benjamin Judlow.
At one o'clock the meeting adjourned and luncheon was served in the grill room of the Hotel du Pont. There were about 250 guests in attendance. Addresses were made by a number of prominent loan workers, both men and women, and the new Delaware Victory Song, written by Mrs. Frank Hall Davis of Dover, was sung by Mrs. Davis and sung by the guests.
After luncheon Josiah Marvel, county director of the Victory Loan introduced Chester B. Koone of Washington, director of postal savings, whose strong appeal told that little Delaware should be very proud of all the nice things her friends from Washington, Pennsylvania and New Jersey said about her, and means we must work very hard to live up to our reputation.
Our State motto for this drive is 'We Finish What We Begin,' and since what we have accomplished in the past we can still accomplish. There are no yellow Delawareans. Our country has a debt of honor to pay and she will pay.
'We worked, fought and prayed for victory, now we must pay for it. It took four loans to win our victory.'
boys over. It will take one more to get them back, and surely no American will fail them.
'We who have resided comfortably at home, have we a right to hesitate to subscribe because we fear the Loans are a little below par, because we will have to economize a bit, because we will have to give up a few luxuries? The man who subscribed to the first four loans and hesitates to subscribe to this, did he subscribe to the first out of patriotism or out of fear? He was afraid then of our not winning. Now that we have won he says, "I sacrificed for the war, now let the government come to the rescue." He forgets that he is the government. He forgets if every one does not do his utmost to buy bonds, it will mean higher taxes. If he stops to think, would he not rather lend his money to his Uncle Sam than to pay more taxes? We have a debt to pay. We have thousands of our boys still to bring home, and all those who sacrificed their health for us. Those who are wounded, ill, maimed and insane are to be cared for.
'These are only a few of the arguments why we should buy bonds, and so if we know nothing good to say about the loan let us keep very quiet, for when we have become enlightened we will be ashamed not to lend every dollar that is possible to our country. Let us all be optimistic, let us make this the most successful drive. It will be the last chance, we, in this way can show our loyalty to our country.'
The meeting ended with a newsreel war film, 'The Prince of Peace,' the most wonderful picture of the war, one that has just been released. It is hoped that this picture can be procured for Newark some time in the near future.
Mrs. W. B. Lester of New Castle, chairman of publicity for the Victory Loan entertained at her home in Delaware City on Wednesday. At a delightful luncheon.
The guests consisted of the different county publicity chairmen who were invited to meet Miss Leah Burton of Lewes, State Chairman of Publicity. Miss Burton outlined the work for the coming drive.
Miss Harter was among the guests present. Contributed.
The films were all American and the entertainment to the following week. Gautunxd a Douglas Fairbanks picture.
