MEXICO CITY, Feb. 20. (UP)—U. S. Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., arrives Tuesday from Brazil for the opening of the inter-American conference Wednesday on problems of war and peace.
His arrival was awaited eagerly by delegates from other American republics who are anxious to know the United States' latest decision on Argentina. Assistant Secretary of State Nelson A. Rockefeller who arrived Sunday has sidestepped all questions regarding Argentina, saying that Stettinius will be the spokesman for the United States delegation.
Stettinius has been absent from Washington for a month and comes here directly from the Big Three conference at Yalta. He was expected to confer immediately with the other American foreign ministers and give them a first hand report on the decisions made in the Crimea.
Opinion was divided among the delegates in regard to their south American sister nation. Ecuador and various other delegations have announced that they want a restoration of continental solidarity. Others, however, are strongly opposed to the regime of President Edelmira J. Farrell, which Stettinius once described in a letter to a California congressman as a Fascist military clique.
With Stettinius in his army transport plane will be Brazilian Foreign Minister Leao Veloso. The two men spent the week end together in Rio de Janeiro consulting Brazilian President Getulio Vargas.
