NEW-YORK, Jan. 2.

Last Friday in the Afternoon, the Rev. Mr. WHITEFIELD, visited the Goal of the City ; and preached on these Words of St. Matthew. Chap. xxv. 38, 39, 40.

When saw we thee a Stranger, and took thee in ? Or naked. and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick or in Prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and Say unto them, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye have done it unto one of these my Brethren, ye have done it unto me. That truly Reverend Man delivered an excellent Discourse on a Subject on which Self feeling must have made very affecting to his Hearers, who were greatly edified by the salutary Advice he gave to them. Then the good Man. being informed that no Provision was made for the Support of Debtors. he generously gave, out of his Purse, enough to purchase 10 Cords of Wood for the Use of the poorest Prisoners, and promised to make a Collection for the Relief. and for discharging a few, who are confined for Small Debts, which are not the Consequence of either Extravagance or Idleness. What a Pity, that such a God-like Man's Constitution is almost worn out by Apostolick Labours !
