Full Text

If the American Exponent, published in New Orleans, is designed as a conservative journal, it strikes us, from its complexion lately, that it is overstepping the limit and degenerating into the rabidness of other political papers. The last number before us is full of incendiary appeals in support of candidates for office, of whom the people certainly ought to be able to judge, without the usual clap-trap of which the following is a sample from the Exponent--"Brother Mechanics! We have a few words to say to you. Your honesty in politics as well as in your business, has never been doubted, nor can it be. We are not now offered "$3 per day and roast beef," but our ticket points you to as honest a set of men as ever were put in nomination for your suffrages."

Hamlet's advice to the players would be good, for a conservative press, in politics and religion, to follow. There is such a thing as tearing a passion to tatters, and doing too much for a good cause. Nothing but cool, calm and dispassionate reason, can ever be used successfully against error.
