NEW-YORK, Dec. 11.

Capt. Barrel, from Point Petre, (Guadaloupe) informs that an embargo was laid on that port for eight days previous to his sailing, owing to an expedition that was fitting out at Point Petre, consisting of the brig General Erneuf, and a large cutter, both French privateers, carrying upwards of 300 men.

This expedition was planned against St. Bartholomews and was completely successful.

The fleet was surprised and carried at midnight; and one brig and schooner lying there, both belonging to Baltimore, were captured; they were under Swedish flags and loaded with coffee from St. Domingo. The expedition returned to Point Petre on the 19th of November with their prizes and 30,000 lbs. coffee, taken from the store of Mr. ----, agent for the Americans engaged in that traffic.

Several large West-Indiamen have been captured by French privateers and brought to Point Petre, with coffee, sugar and cotton, from Demarara and Surinam. Markets at Point Petre for American commodities, very dull, and payment in bad sugar and high price.
