Massachusetts Election.
From the Boston Patriot of the 18th inst.
Massachusetts Senate.—We are satisfied from the returns of votes that at the commencement of the ensuing session, the senate will be composed of twenty federal, and nineteen democratic senators.—The vacancy is in Bristol district; where, we lament to state, the scattered federal votes in one town would have elected the other federal candidate. We anticipate there will be some difficulty in organizing the senate; and until it is organized the business of the state cannot proceed, nor can the votes for governor, &c. be opened or counted. This will only happen should the house be democratic; and the vacancy in the senate should be filled by the democratic candidate. In that event the senate will be equally divided, 20 to 20. The party then which permits one of its members to take the chair, will become the minority; as the president cannot vote unless when the senate is equally divided. If the house should be federal, and the federal candidate in Bristol elected, there will be no difficulty in the organization, as the senate then, exclusive of the president, will be 20 federal to 19 democrat.
