Copy of a letter from an officer at Middleton, dated September 22, to the continental Board of War, received by His Excellency the Governour on Wednesday evening last.
YESTERDAY afternoon came in a fleet from sea, consisting of 7 men of war and 45 square rigged vessels, we are informed by some refugees that made a descent on our shore since the fleet came in, that it is the second division of Arbuthnot's fleet come with troops from England; but what number we could not learn. They also say the troops on board were wild Irish and Hessians. The flags at main-top were blue, their ensigns were part blue, and some were blue and red. We are informed by a deserter that came off yesterday, that a fleet of 17 sail is going on a southern expedition, but where he could not tell, they were three men of war, the rest small square rigged vessels. Ten of this small fleet this morning set sail, the rest lies at Sandy Hook. I expect them to sail every moment. This day at 2 o'clock there was a great number of cannon fired, as if some extraordinary news had been brought by them; the whole fleet drew up in a line and fired several guns each.
By information from another hand the number of troops on board the fleet was 4000.
