TALLAHASSEE - Construction has begun on the second unit of the student union building at Florida A and M University. The unit will cost approximately $250,000 and is being built by Ruscon Construction Company of Jacksonville, and when completed, will bring the total cost of the union building to approximately a half million dollars.
This building is but one of the several which have been added to the ever growing skyline of the palm-dotted campus during the past seven years during which time construction totaling more than $7,000,000 has been in force.
This first unit of the union building, which was opened at the beginning of the current school term, is ultra modern in every concept, and is regarded as one of the finest buildings of its kind anywhere in America today. The two story red brick building basically consists of a modern grill and snack bar on the first floor while the ground floor consists of a spacious lounge and recreation room.
The new unit will house the post office, bookstore, student offices, and will include an extension of the recreation and lounge areas. Plush booths, tables and chairs, and the modern snack bar are prominent facets of the first floor of the present unit of the building.
The ground floor, like the first floor, has a glass wall on the southwest side of the building, which affords a panoramic view of the campus.
The ground floor is superbly furnished with low ultra modern ebony furniture. A new 24-inch television set has been provided for the use of the students as has been a cabinet radio-record player combination.
Presently, the Ruscon firm is completing work on the $1,000,000 structure which will house units of the school of agriculture and home economics. On the drawing board are plans for the $366,000 football stadium, a $100,000 cafetorium for the demonstration high school, and a $500,000 women's dormitory.
Recently, students attending the demonstration high school moved into the new $450,000 demonstration high school building. And at the beginning of the current school term, university students began using for the first time the $1,000,000 classroom building.
