There are several living humorists about New York, who are in the habit of entertaining their friends with New England stories, which never fail of producing unbounded applause. The reader has no doubt often heard of that excellent tale of Deacon Amaziah Bigelow, who with his company from Barkshire county, in Massachusetts, was at the taking of Burgoyne. Arrived on the battle ground in the midst of peril, he refused to take hold till he had seen Col. Warner. "I shant attack no attack," says he, "till I see Col. Warner." Solicited by an officer on horseback to make an onset upon a party of Hessians, he asked "are you Col. Warner? my name is Deacon Amaziah Bigelow, from Barkshire county, Massachusetts, and these men are all from Barkshire county, Massachusetts—there a'nt a coward hair amongst us, not one; we are all from Barkshire county; but I shant attack no attack till I see Col. Warner—they say he's a fighting man." Col. Warner came and assigned him a station, when, having drawn up his Barkshire men into a solid hollow square," he made a speech and offered a long prayer. then showing his men the enemy he bid them go at it; "God Almighty," says he, "will go before and I'll go behind, and the day shall be ours."
