Full Text

Mr. Hatch has introduced a resolution to the House calling upon the Auditor of State, John Brough, Esq., to say whether, in his opinion, the Treasurer of State, Mr. Joseph Whitehill, had been guilty of any neglect of the interests of the State in failing to transfer certain old stock of the German Bank of Wooster owned by Ohio, and receive the proceeds thereof into the treasury! And this resolution it adopted by a strict party vote! Now look at the meanness of such procedure. Mr. Brough and Mr. Whitehill are high Executive State officers, of different political parties, and, personally, not on friendly terms. Instead of appointing a select committee of their own body to investigate this charge, and with power to examine Auditor Brough under oath—as the Whigs of the House proposed and endeavored to re-establish the majority of the suggestion of Mr. Hatch—and at the previous suggestion, no doubt, of the Auditor himself—they force through a resolution asking Mr. Auditor Brough to give his opinion of the supposed delinquency of a brother officer!

It is not our disposition to find fault with the majority in the legislature unnecessarily; but we cannot permit such instances of party trickery and meanness to escape public animadversion.
