"The dispatches from Spain continue as numerous as ever, but bring few rays of hope for the Republic. At Valencia the fighting still progresses, with the government troops steadily gaining ground. At Seville a large popular demonstration has been made in favor of the Madrid authorities. Granada is reported to have surrendered, and the Province of Andalusia is said to be completely pacified. Don Carlos is still northeast of Burgos, in Biscay. The United States steamer Shenandoah, in Cadiz harbor, has ordered the Spanish frigate Villa de Madrid, in the possession of the insurgents, under her guns. An Italian frigate is on its way to Cartagena to protect the Italian subjects at that place."
