Dr. John Shelton Surface (Jack to his Tazewell County friends and relatives) has found a welcome place in the Shawsville community.
The following article appeared in the July 5 "Montgomery News Messenger" of Christiansburg. Dr. Surface is the grandson of Mrs. H. S. Surface of Tazewell, and is well known here.
Shawsville Ruritans Saturday will celebrate their most recent successful civic project.
The project is Dr. John Shelton Surface, Tazewell County native, recent graduate of Medical College of Virginia, and the community's first, full-time, resident dentist.
"Acquisition" of the new "professional" for the growing Shawsville - Elliston area will be marked with an open house in his offices in the Wills - Pearman building from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Actually, according to Ruritan officials credit for getting the 30 year old dentist to move to Shawsville should go to the former Patty Sue Wills of Shawsville.
While she and her parents were living in Tazewell several years ago, she met her future husband while both were in high school.
The personable dentist reports that he holds a degree from the University of Richmond along with his DDS from the Medical College.
Patty, now Mrs. Surface, received her PHT (Putting Hubbie Through) diploma from the med school at the same time. Also in this period, the Surfaces became parents of two children, Mike 8, and Kathy, 4. Dr. Surface served four years as a U. S. Navy dental technician and became a charter member of Sigma Chi fraternity on the University of Richmond campus.
Dr. Surface's offices are located in the front suite of the modern Wills - Pearman building in the heart of Shawsville's growing business district.
