The old railroad track across the ice on the Susquehanna, having become much worn, and in two or three places slightly broken, by the immense travel over it for several weeks, the Railroad Company on Wednesday commenced laying down a new track, which was completed yesterday afternoon by the railroad supervisors, in less than thirty-six hours—a feat not easily equalled by the best railroad builders in the United States. Immediately after its completion, some sixty or seventy burthen cars, all heavily laden, passed over it with ease and safety.
The road now, with its new and substantial rails, appears as if it would last for several weeks to come, provided no sudden change in the weather takes place, the ice being apparently as strong and firm as it has been at any time during the winter. This bridge, or railroad, by the way, is a natural curiosity, and has excited no little interest. A number of our citizens daily take a trip in the cars for the express purpose of seeing it. There are two good hotels at Havre de Grace, one kept by Mr. Hopper and the other by Mr. Wells, at either of which visitors are pleasantly and comfortably accommodated.
By means of this track over 200 tons of freight will now be passed from Philadelphia to Baltimore, most of which is destined for the West to pass over the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, which would otherwise go over the Pennsylvania Railroad, avoiding Baltimore and the great railroad of Maryland.
