SAD EXPERIENCE OF A GRANGER.
There came near being a sensation in this city this forenoon, but happily it was averted. A well-to-do farmer and his wife came to town with some butter, and not being able to dispose of it satisfactorily to the grocers, he drove up to a private residence, where he had a slight acquaintance with the family. He got out, hitched his horses, and, leaving his wife in the wagon, opened the gate, and going round to the back door, rapped thereon. A voice from within answered, bidding him come in. The lady of the house was there alone, busily engaged in kneading dough. He told her that he had some butter to sell, and wanted to know if she desired any. She replied that she did, wanted to know the price, etc. He told her. She said she would take all he had, which was five pounds. But here was a dilemma. Her money was in her pocket-book, and her pocket-book was in the bosom of her dress. Her hands were covered with flour and dough, and she did not wish to soil her dress, or take the trouble to wash her hands; so, after a few moments of hesitation, she told the Granger where her money was, and requested him to take it out for her. With a chivalry so characteristic of the sterner sex, he hastened to oblige her. For some unaccountable reason he couldn't find it. The situation was embarrassing. He had been gone so long that his wife was getting uneasy, and had called to him two or three times. He didn't want to leave, however, without his money, and so he kept on hunting. At last his wife made up her mind that she would go and see what had become of him. This she did, and had it not been for her sudden appearance on the scene, we firmly believe that he would have been hunting for that money yet.
