Minnie Johnson Tells How She Set Fire to the Indiana Woman's Prison.
Indianapolis, March 21.-Minnie Johnson, 17 years of age, an inmate of the reform department of the Women's prison, confessed that she set fire to that institution when one of the buildings was destroyed a few weeks ago.
She had formed a friendship for a colored inmate, Patsey Williams, who stole some handkerchiefs while doing outside work, and gave them to the Johnson girl. The latter, when asked about the matter by the matron, refused to tell anything.
When told that Williams could be sent to prison for it, Minnie Johnson determined to escape by setting fire to the building she was in.
While ironing, she took a holder, and putting it to the gas jet, laid the burning cloth on a shelf. That night, one of the younger inmates, a pet of Miss Johnson's, was taken sick from exposure, when the convicts and girls were taken from the building. The little girl died, and Miss Johnson grieved over the result of the fire so much that she was driven to a confession.
