The following is given in the Georgia Journal of July 21, as an extract of a letter from an intelligent gentleman to the Editor, under date of "Point Petre, July 2d, "The troops lately stationed at Colerain have been removed to this place, a more healthy and pleasant situation. Gen. Mathews is here and expected to remain some weeks. You are acquainted with the general's mission in this quarter as well as I am. He has been confined by sickness since his arrival, (a fortnight past,) but is now getting better. "About 170 men are now mustered at this station; and a company of riflemen under command of Capt. Forsythe is daily expected from Norfolk. Capt. Williams commands a company of Marines on the south point of Cumberland Island, consisting of about 60 men. Four gun boats have been here for some time, two arrived yesterday from Norfolk, and several more are expected. "Commissioners, as we understand were sent up the river St. Mary's a few days since, by order of the acting governor of East-Florida, for the purpose of ordering all persons from the province who were not actually subjects of his Catholic Majesty." It is possible that the United States troops mentioned above, comprise a part of the force intended by the government to garrison the forts in East Florida, in case of its peaceable delivery to the United States, under the act said to have been passed by Congress, during the last session, authorizing the Executive to occupy it in such an event. Gen. Matthews, mentioned in the letter, who was in this city last winter, has been rumored to be one of the commissioners appointed with a view to negociate on this subject with the Spanish authorities. We state this as rumor merely, without vouching for its correctness.--N. Intelligencer.
