Full Text
From the N. H. Republican.
I perceive by the number of candidates for our next Congressional election, that Strafford is in danger of not being represented. There seems to be a design and almost combination in the upper counties to prevent an election of a member from Strafford. I know nothing against Mr. Eastman, but am informed, from good authority, that he is not popular, and will not be supported in several counties. The consequence will be, that some of the numerous candidates will have more votes than Eastman, and we shall lose our representative. To prevent this, we ought to support another man, one who will unite the people, and have more support than Eastman, thro' the State. The Hon. Daniel C. Atkinson has been nominated; and if we can believe reports will have more votes in the state at large, than Mr. Eastman. Mr. Atkinson is considered in every respect equal to Mr. Eastman, in point of talents, respectability, or standing. Having other things equal, it will then become our duty to support the man who will be most likely to succeed; and not obstinately persist in bolstering up an unpopular candidate. It is almost certain that Mr. Eastman will not be elected; and if we wish or mean to have a member from Strafford, it is expedient and necessary to exert ourselves for Atkinson.
A well wisher to Strafford.
