The Charleston Mercury, of the 10th inst., intimates its confidence that the rapidly increasing popularity of Mr. Calhoun will supersede the necessity of a National Convention to nominate him for the Presidency.
We need make no comments on the article referred to. Mr. Calhoun is certainly well known to the country as one of its most eminent citizens, and we doubt not that his claims are highly appreciated. So also are the claims of other distinguished citizens. Every good and true Republican should undoubtedly deprecate a convention at too early a period. It might seem like jockeyship—and they who attended it would be looked upon as jockeys "booted and spurred" to ride over public sentiment. It is most assuredly the duty of every patriot to look first to measures, for the relief of the country ; afterwards the Presidency can be thought of.
Our motto is, "all hands aboard for the country under our present Captain, and after establishing its prosperity, then let the question, as to who shall take the command for a new cruise, be agitated."
