Full Text

We are happy to learn, that the Bank of the U. S. seems at last descending 'to the tomb of the Capulets'—may the verdant laurel forever bloom around the venerable brow of Clinton. 17 to 17, & his vote was the death-warrant. How much hung upon that voice! How nobly has he borne himself up under the responsibility which hung upon him!—If a Roman could deserve a civic crown for saving the life of a fellow-citizen, how much does that man merit who preserves the constitution of his country?—We fear however, that the struggle is not yet past.—The monster seems to lie in its last agonies—yet it will pray for our charitable compassion.—Like the condemned criminal, it will beg for a little reprieve, to 'wind up' its affairs, & make its peace with heaven. Not an hour—not a moment should be given it. Continue it for two years longer—and like an Incubus it will hang upon us forever. An interval will only be allowed, for intrigue and corruption—and it will next demand as a right, what it has solicited as a favor. A way with this course of indecision—let us have no season of vexation in our political calendar.
