Full Text

They write from Montreal, that General Gage, by his generosity, his Justice and humanity, has endeared himself to the whole colony. To the Indians he has particularly recommended himself by a determination in their favour against the Jesuits, who had expelled them from a fine spot of ground near the banks of the river St. Laurence. They had frequently applied for redress to the French Governor, but all in vain; the prevalence of jesuitical influence was too powerful to suffer an impartial decision in the Frenchmen. The Indians were conscious of this; and being told one day, that the Jesuits were using their accustomed arts to bias, in the same manner, the mind of the present Governor, they assembled in a body, and went to the Governor's house; to whom the Chief addressed himself in the following terms: Brother, the Jesuit, we are informed - have had a Talk with you. We know the subject, and therefore came to warn you not to listen to their words. They are fraught with subtlety and craft; the poison of the serpent issues from their lips; their tongues are dipped in oil, and they value themselves on words, not their deeds .....As to us, poor Indians, behold we are ignorant and artless, and can only appeal to your justice, and our own right, to confute their fallacious arguments....... We conjure you therefore, by this string of wampum, to render us that justice we have a right to demand, by giving back the land to the possession of its proper owners!'...This the Governor immediately complied with.
