Full Text
If the remark of the Vermont correspondent of the Boston Journal, that it is "not probable" that Senator Edmunds requested President Cleveland to retain Gen. Wells, was meant to convey a covert suggestion that it was possible that Mr. Edmunds had made such a request, it was a quite gratuitous remark.
Senator Edmunds has asked no favors for himself or friends, of the President; and if any Democrats are laving the flattering unction to their souls that the Senator will allow a change like that in the collectorship to pass without inquiry and protest, they will be effectually undeceived in due time.
Mr. Edmunds, as it is well known, took a leading part in securing an agreement among the Republican Senators before they separated, to hold Mr. Cleveland to his professions of regard for civil service reform, and promises not to remove trusty officials without good cause; and we know nothing about the make up of our Vermont Senators, if they do not both stand squarely by their own professions of regard for the reform of the civil service, in this matter.
They will consent to no crowding out of honest men and inoffensive partisans to make places for the most active and unscrupulous partisans in the Democratic party.
