MARKED AFTER A HORSE.
Pitiful
Deformity of
Three
Children
of Salem.
Agent Thrall of the Humane society and
Dr G. Pierrepont Davis returned yesterday
from a visit to Norwich where they examined the three deformed children of
Frank Way of Salem. The children are
6, 8 and 10 years old and bright and intelligent, but every one is marked after a
horse.
Their legs are bent over backwards and
turned directly around below the knees in
such a manner that they travel on all fours.
The legs resemble the hind legs of a horse.
One of the children is a girl with a
bright, pretty face and is in every respect
the equal of any other child of her age
with the exception of this horrible deformity which causes her to hop around
as the witnesses describe it, like an ape.
The case is truly a pitiful one and the examination was made by Dr Davis and two
Norwich doctors to see if it could be
helped in any way. It was the opinion
that if they were taken in charge now while
young they might be cured to such an extent that they could walk as other people
and become self-supporting.
The Humane society proposed to help
Mr Way have his children cared for, but
he objected, advancing as a reason that if
they were taken from home they would
miss the fresh air.

Fire in New London.
New London, May 4.-Shortly after 1
o'clock this morning flames were discovered in one of the big lumber sheds
forming a part of the lumber plant of
Mayor H. A. Bently, located in eastern
New London. The fire, which is supposed to have originated from the sparks
of a passing locomotive on the New London Northern railroad, was burning
briskly in the roof, and before the department arrived on the scene the flames were
well under way. The building was destroyed together with the contents, several
thousand feet of lumber, causing a loss of
about $7,000. Several freight cars were
standing on tracks on either side of the
burning building and these were also
damaged to some extent. The total loss
will probably reach $8,000, fully insured.

Ninety Deaths From Cholera.
ST PETERSBURG, May 4.-Cholera has
broken out again on the frontier of Russian Poland. During the past two weeks
170 cases have been reported and ninety
deaths.

Necessity of Vaccination.
The state board of health has issued a
circular on the remarkable prevalence of
smallpox and the frequent outbreaks of the
disease in Connecticut, calling on the
people to provide for vaccination, especially in school and town authorities to
provide free vaccination, which is declared to be a more effective means of protection than anything else known to man.

Hartford Bicyclist Killed.
HARTFORD, May 4.-A. M. Vanderpoel,
aged 26, a graduate of Trinity '89, was
killed this morning. He was riding a
bicycle and while crossing the Capitol
avenue bridge collided with another wheelman. Vanderpoel was thrown in front of
a horse car, which passed over his body
killing him instantly.
