Full Text

Congress have received information, that the most seducing propositions have lately been made to our Ally by a British agent at Versailles; that the concessions had been tendered, the best adapted to seduce a power influenced either by avarice, by ambition, or by a sense of weakness; but the agent refused to treat at the same time of the independence of the United States. To these propositions our allies answered simply, that the independence of the United States formed the basis of their system; and so the negotiation was broke off.-By this we may see the insidious policy that still directs the councils of Britain: that court makes proposals for peace separately to us and our allies, hoping thereby to divide us; but to the immortal honor of France and America, both nations have, unknown to each other, adopted similar resolutions against a separate negotiation, and refused to listen to any terms of accommodation without an acknowledgement of the independence of the United States: this evinces the mutual attachment and fidelity of the allies, will endear them more to each other, and place them high in the estimation and applause of the present and succeeding generations.
