Dec. 1.—The non-juring priests seem determined, with the aid of the enemies of the constitution, whether in or out of the kingdom, to occasion trouble and perplexity in every department of France. It is a question, however, whether the several laws enacted against them by the national assembly will not do more harm than good. It were to be wished that the greater part of the existing representatives of the nation would less expose their flank to the enemies of the constitution, and not make it apparent that they are the enemies of religion, as well as all its appendages.—We cannot, on this occasion, but recollect the violent speeches of M. Inard, member from Mar-seilles, against the clergy, speeches which brought upon him the reproach of Atheism, even from a constitutional priest, one of the members of the assembly.—At the session of Nov. 22, a member proposed that the very word clergy should hereafter be abolished; which occasioned a bitter reply from a bishop newly elected, in which he was supported by every ecclesiastic in the assembly. Too many of the present members seem to have adopted the ideas of the club of Jacobin, who now seem to govern the taste of Paris, and are rather disposed to tear open afresh the wounds made by the revolution, than to close them by mild and healing applications.
