City Man

The country would be wonderful
If only all the bugs
Had someplace else to live and
work—
For instance, under rugs.

I love to flee the city streets
And all the city mugs,
To soothe my nerves in rural
peace—
But I can't stand the bugs.

They bite and chew the whole
day through
And mostly upon me:
No sooner do I sit me down
Beneath a verdant tree

Than hordes converge from earth
and sky
With mandibles and fangs,
To savor of mv flesh and blood
Like wild orangutangs.

I limp back to the city with
My torso seared with bites,
With bumps and welts that burn
and sting,
And through the torrid nights

While traffic roars, and in the
streets
There roam the urban thugs
I try to dream of rural peace
Without. of course, the bugs.
