A terrible tragedy occurred on the last trip of the steamboat Bart Able, from Trenton (Ouachita Parish) to New Orleans. The Ouachita, Mr. M. C. Hardy, took on board the boat at Trenton three prisoners who had been sentenced to imprisonment in the State Penitentiary. The prisoners were well known robbers and horse thieves, named Charles Laven, Phillip Wilborn, and Benjamin P. Nutt. When the boat had passed Trinity, in Black river, these three men, who were chained together by the neck for safe keeping, during the night slipped overboard, and coming in contact with the wheel, were in all probability drowned immediately. Nothing was seen of the men after they sprang from the side of the boat. Considerable consternation was created on the boat, but nothing could be done for the unfortunates.
