The Girls' College.
There are a few old fogies who want to cripple Mississippi's pet institution—the Girl's College—but they will not be allowed to prevail, we are sure.
We hope that the Legislature will make a generous appropriation to the College. Its success has been unparalleled, and it has more than met the expectations of all its friends.
We think that the College is one of the cheapest in the United States; we mean of course, as compared with schools of equal rank, and the proposition that it shall be kept out of an appropriation sufficient to maintain its present high standard because the per capita distribution to pupils in the common schools is limited in amount, is scarcely worth consideration. To stint the College would benefit the primary schools but little, and this all know who have tried to create a prejudice against the College, because the State appropriates largely more per capita to that institution than to the primary schools. And as these objectors and grumblers know it, so do the people in whose behalf they claim to speak, as well as the members of the Legislature, and their specious criticisms will fail of effect.
