The following cases were brought before Justice Hollingshead: John Sims, John W. Burker, William Benj. Nutt, and Jos. Hurst were brought up on charge of vagrancy, and sent to the work-house for thirty days each.
Alexander Eggleston was arrested by officer Bell for assault on two Dutchmen. While on his way to the police office, he escaped from the officer, and gave leg bail. But he was captured, after a tight race, and taken before Justice Hollingshead, who held him to bail in the sum of s333. The Justice then announced his determination to come up to the strictest letter of the law in regard to securities, and in future should accept none but real estate sureties. He commenced with this case. We are glad to see him take this stand, as we think that we shall hear no more complaints on that score, as we are assured that he will act hereafter with the strictest impartiality in enforcing this determination.
Wm. Ratliff was committed to jail by the same magistrate for assaulting and severely beating J. W. Buchan.
John Carpenter, Irish, was also committed to jail by same Justice for attempting to shoot the officers of the Auxiliary Guard, who had arrested him for drunkenness in the street. He drew a revolver on them, but was disarmed before he could do any damage.
James Keenan and John Buchley were committed to jail by Justice Morsell, for assaulting and beating severely an old Dutchman. Here is another argument for a House of Correction.
The following cases were disposed of by Justice D. Smith: Benj. Green, for threats, was sent to jail; Lydia Ann Johnson, for threats, was bound over to keep the peace; Mary E. E. Foreman, for three cases of larceny, was committed to jail; Francis Mott, charged with threats, was dismissed.
