Full Text

A Natchitoches letter writer suggests to the government the propriety of taking possession of the territory between the Sabine and the Rio Grande, in order to settle at once our right to that territory, and to prevent the Spaniards from instigating the Indians to molest the American settlers bordering on it. But the National Intelligencer replies, that such an occupation of that country would be a violation of our faith, pledged to Spain, to adjust the conflicting claims of the two nations by negotiation. It is hinted, too, that a negotiation may be pending, which may issue in a relinquishment of our right to territory in Texas, for East Florida, and remuneration for Spanish spoliation on our commerce.
