Globetrotters Play In Rain In Reims, France
REIMS, France - It rained "buckets" -- literally and figuratively -- here when the Harlem Globetrotters played the Boston Whirlwinds in the thirtieth game of their current basketball tour of Europe and North Africa.
Despite heavy rain, a large crowd numbering in the thousands had gathered in Stadium Velodrome Auguste Delaune for the outdoor twilight show. The promoters requested the teams to play. Because the event had so long been awaited by the people of the champagne city and the teams' crowded schedule had no open dates for a return, the request was granted.
The players and Referee Elliott Hasan of Chicago wore raincoats and carried umbrellas during the pre-game introduction. The game saw the players slip, skid and splash as the rain continued but the Globetrotters produced enough of their skill and comedy to win an ovation at the conclusion.
Funniest sight of the tour was Capt. Marques Haynes of the Globetrotters pulling off his celebrated dribble exhibition while carrying an umbrella in one hand.
P.S. - The Globetrotters won, 18-16, for their thirtieth consecutive victory on the tour.
