Full Text
Several of our correspondents complain that the writers of articles published in our paper are suffered by us to be known, and accuse us of betraying trust. That several originals were shown by us, during the session of the Court, we do not deny; but we knew not the writers themselves, and no secrecy had been enjoined, and one or two of the pieces were of a character which created considerable interest. They had been charged upon individuals who we knew did not write them, and we were willing to show them to a few individuals, in order, if possible, to learn the names of the real authors. But we have suffered the most from busy-bodies. Scarcely a day passed away during the last court session, but from three to five, and even ten, lawyers, would come into our office; and communications must of necessity be exposed while the compositors are putting them in type. If these gentlemen are willing to walk from one stand to another, overlooking the work of the compositors, and even taking pieces from before them, to see the hand-writing, and that too in our absence, we must suffer; but it is more from the prying spirit of others than from our own imprudence. The same evil has existed since the sitting of the court, and even within one week. We have charged our hands to snub such people a little; but as they are peaceably inclined, we are induced to publish this special notice.
