The people of Virginia coming to their senses; OR, TRUE REPUBLICANISM triumphant over JACOBINISM and Falsehood.
By a gentleman just from Leesburg, Virginia, we have received the following information, which he says may be relied on:
At an election held in that place, on Monday the 11th inst. for a member of congress, and members of assembly, Mr. Lewis, the federal candidate for congress, had 517 votes, and Mr. Brent, the former democratic member, 170 votes. The federalists of assembly carried in the same manner. What is very remarkable is, that at the last election in the same place, the democrats carried nearly three to one. This is an astonishing instance of the people returning to TRUE REPUBLICANISM. It was said by the returning democrats, "We have tried it long enough; we have been led to believe that our situation would be bettered, but we find no such thing. We have been taught to believe lies, witness the tax laid upon brown sugar, coffee, salt, &c. and taken off refined sugar, &c. and TWO MILLIONS of dollars, put at the disposal of Jefferson, for which a democratic congress have not made him accountable!!"
