"A good many people wonder," said an employee of Armour & Co., "why Mr. Armour works so hard. They can't understand it because they do not know the man. Every morning he gets here at 6:30 or 6:45-never later than the latter hour. He begins work immediately and keeps it up until 6 o'clock in the evening. Some of the men are here as early as 6:30, but the most of them come at 7 o'clock or half-past. They work until 6, and are all willing to do so. The hours are long for office work but the men are well paid and well treated. Armour prides himself in having about him one of the finest lot of lieutenants to be found in business circles in this country. There is a head for every department-for the city sales, the foreign trade, the dressed beef, the canned goods, the glue factory, the butterine, the car service, the traveling men, etc. Armour works early and late but he is never hurried. He takes plenty of time for everything. He is never worried and, therefore, enjoys his work and thrives on it. "Why,' I heard him remark one day, 'I could not live if I didn't have my daily work to attend to. People may wonder why I get here so early in the morning and stay so late at night. I am not compelled to do so, nor is it pride. I work because I love work. I never feel so good as when I get here in the morning and start in. I'm like a horse-I eat like a horse and am just as steady as an old horse at my work. I feel so good some mornings when I come down to the office that the buttons pretty near bust off my vest.' "That's the way 'the old man,' as he calls himself, feels on the work question. And I really believe he is better off than the men who work shorter hours and are worried and hurried in trying to rush things through in a short time."-Chicago Herald.
