The prefect of Venice ordered ten sail of the line, 6 of which of 90 guns, to be laid on the stocks in the arsenals. The keel of the Charlemagne was laid down on the 7th of March, anniversary of the 1793 coalition against France, with extra carnival and great rejoicings. Naval commissioners ordered vast stores of ship timber from Dalmatia forests to arsenals and construction of two immense dry docks on principles used by the Venetian republic for 24 years to preserve ships.
