SAGINAW, Mich., Dec. 26.-John Eschenbach, 25, attempted to play Santa Claus at the annual Christmas exercises of the Arthur Hill high school, and his make-up consisted of the regulation cotton whiskers and scarlet clothing.

While reaching over some candles to take a present from the tree, his robe caught fire.

In a minute he was a living torch of flame and the whiskers were burning on his face. Miss Frances Utter, one of the high school teachers, grabbed a pail of water which had been placed in the room for just such emergencies, and dashed it over Eschenbach. It failed to extinguish the flames, so he rolled on the floor before the children.

Eschenbach was severely burned about the face and body. The tree was destroyed.
