Full Text

The call for our State Convention is for "Delegates equal in number to their representatives in the General Assembly."

The meaningless (if not invidious) distinction between Senatorial and Representative Delegates, is very properly ignored, as all stand on precisely the same footing, and the only object is to secure each county as near as possible a just and bona fide representation.

Since Union county's connection with our up river neighbors as a Senatorial District, we have enjoyed the right of appointing, without contest, one of the four Delegates to which these four counties are entitled in State Conventions of the Opposition party.

Last fall, our Convention designated a man for the district as usual. The other counties—or, rather, a few friends of a particular candidate—this year, demanded a Senatorial Conference. To show them our views, citizens of our county met them at Williamsport, Tuesday last. Upon ascertaining, however, that a bare majority there were determined to disregard our right to select our own candidate untrammeled by them, our citizens withdrew, and refused to be bound by their acts. The others nominated a citizen of Lycoming.

One of the Lycoming Conferees stood by the rights of our county to the last, and we heard many estimable members of our party in that county admit our right to an equal and free representation with the other counties in the State Convention. As it is fixed by those who are thus—to his damage—attempting to crowd their favorite, Lycoming would have two delegates, Centre one, Clinton (with 300 less Opposition votes than Union) one, and Union—for the first time—none!

Our county, will of course, ask for her seat in the Convention.

The Muncy Luminary (issued Tuesday, but not circulated until the meeting had been held) gives its views as follows:

SENATORIAL DELEGATE—Of the four counties in this Senatorial District, but one, Union, made a selection, at its County Convention last fall, of Senatorial Delegate to the People's State Convention, to be held at Harrisburg next month. The other counties having shown so much indifference on the subject, we hope that the Conference meeting to be held at Williamsport, this (Tuesday) evening, will concur in their nomination. Unless they do this, Union county will have no voice in the State Convention, as the Representative Delegates in that District have been chosen from Snyder and Juniata counties. Each of the other counties in this Senatorial District has a Representative Delegate, and we see no good reason why Union county should not be allowed to have a voice in the State Convention, by giving her the Senatorial Delegate. Her claims are reasonable and fair, and common courtesy would dictate that they should be respected.
