SPEER AND ADAMS SHOW STRENGTH Former Governor of Colorado and Mayor of Denver Both Anxious to Succeed Senator Hughes.

[By Morning Journal Special Leased Wire]

Denver, Jan. 22.

As the day approaches for the first ballot for United States senator to succeed the late James J. Hughes, Jr., supporters of Mayor Robert W. Speer of Denver and former Governor Alva Adams of Pueblo are exerting every effort to show their maximum strength. Apparently the contest at this stage has narrowed to these two candidates, although in case of a prolonged deadlock, which now seems certain, enough democrats may be deflected to elect a third candidate. There has been considerable agitation recently in favor of Governor John F. Shafroth, but there is little likelihood that the governor will show any strength on the first ballot. It was announced that republican members will caucus Monday night to determine the candidate who will receive their complimentary vote. Republican leaders gave emphatic assurance none of their votes will be given to a democrat even in case of a prolonged deadlock.

The democratic state advisory board met tonight and after several hours' discussion took action favoring a caucus. A resolution was unanimously adopted requesting Senator W. H. Adams, president pro tem of the senate, and Representative Durfee to call a caucus of democratic members Monday night to select a candidate to succeed the late Senator Hughes. What action the legislators will take appears problematical.
