A CARD.

New Orleans, August 10, 1872.

To the Editors of the New Orleans Picayune:

GENTLEMEN--In your issue of the fourth instant, speaking of the gentlemen who participated in the procession of the Liberal party of this city on Saturday night, the third instant, your reporter saw fit to mention: "That the First Division, led by the Chief Engineer of the Fire Department," etc., ignoring me in my capacity as a citizen, free to act in politics in accordance with my judgment--an inherent right belonging to every American citizen--and apparently insinuating an attempt on my part to give a political significance to the preferment of the gentlemen constituting the personnel of the Fire Department. Thus you would place me in a false position, and in the future, when your reporter deems it necessary to speak of my politics, he will remember that I avail myself of the privilege enjoyed alike by all men to think and act as a citizen--not as a fireman. Your statement in the Picayune of the tenth instant I would also call your attention to. In refutation of the assertion made, that I interfered in the proceedings of the organization of the "Seymour Southrons" of 1868, or made myself conspicuous at said meeting. I am now forced to contradict, without reserve, and with every emphasis, the slanderous statement made in your columns.

Respectfully,
THOMAS O'CONNOR.
