Apis was a sacred bull that was
worshiped by the ancient Egyptians
and kept in the temple of Osiris at
Memphis. The bull selected possessed
certain very special features, such as
a black hide with certain marks on
the forehead and back, and other dis-
tinguishing marks. The birthday of
the bull Apis was celebrated every
year by the people. When he died
he was embalmed and buried in a
splendid sarcophagus in a special part
of the temple and his death was fol-
lowed by a period of public mourn-
