John L Howard, President of the Seattle Coal and Transportation Company, arrived in Seattle last evening, and was waited upon by an INTELLIGENCER reporter, who found him in the company's office. After a few preliminaries, he unfolded his plans as follows: Our intention is to build an iron pile wharf, on what is called the Cushing pile system, which will practically be a double-decked bridge, cut off in the middle, on which will be built a large warehouse for the reception of freight. This structure will be supplied on either side with coal pockets, with a capacity of from 1500 to 2500 tons each. This wharf will be built on the site now occupied by the old incline, and will be 400 feet in length and 50 feet wide. The wharf will be capable of handling two of our largest steamers at the same time, one on either side. The Cushing pile is made by driving a cluster of wooden piles, of any desired number, and surrounding them with a casing of boiler iron, driven down into the mud below the range of the teredo. The mud, water and slime are then pumped out, and the interior filled with concrete to a point from seven to ten feet above high water, thus making a solid pier impervious to air or water. We will commence work as soon as the plans can be gotten up and contracts let. Mr Howard further said he would remain in town several days on business connected with the company. For the benefit of the Seattle trade, the S C & T Co have built on their San Francisco wharf a separate warehouse, so as to be able to receive freight at anytime, and keep it under cover, and thus avoid the danger and delay of taking freight on their vessels from an open wharf on the day of sailing.
