ABOUT THE RAILROAD.
We have it from reliable information that the Southern Pacific is not going to build its proposed line through Durango at once. This long-cherished hope of the citizens has been further delayed. Without going into the details of the Southern Pacific railroad's dickerings here, it looks to us as if the road has not kept faith with this city. The S. P. has turned us down, in fact. Further delay to us looks like abandonment of the project. There's no use worrying or losing any sleep over the affair, however. Durango has done its part and all this railroad talk has not hurt the city any. Durango will be on the map whether the S. P. builds in here or not. That's not the only railroad in this neck of woods and not the only road with its eye on this fertile district. We want to whisper quietly in your ear that the Rock Island is figuring on a railroad into this part of Colorado. At any rate, it is well to know what the situation is. It is better to get an adverse answer or further delay than no answer at all. It is better for a love-lorn maiden to learn from her sweetheart that he does not contemplate matrimony than to dilly-dally along until she has lost other chances. Many Durango people have been depending altogether too much on railroad expectations. They have been building their business and development plans on railroad hopes and have been waiting and waiting. Those who have been planning a new house or a coat of paint for the barn have been hesitating to see what effect the rail road might have on their plans. Durango can get along without the road. We can go ahead and work out our own destiny and carry out our own plans, and everything will come out all right. We don't have to worry about the railroad anymore. Thank Heaven for that! Let her build or not just as she pleases.
