Eight individuals, Drake University and the National Conference of Christians and Jews have been named winners of the annual Russworm awards of the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
The announcement was made Sunday as the association opened its celebration of Negro Newspaper Week, March 10-16, with a CBS network broadcast.
The Russwurm awards honor the memory of John B. Russwurm, the first Negro newspaper publisher.
They are given in recognition of outstanding achievements in making possible a richer conception of democratic principles and for upholding the highest American traditions.
Winners are: Arthur Godfrey, for democratic method of handling TV broadcasts; General Matthew Ridgeway, for the elimination of segregation in the Army in Pacific command; Pvt. William Thompson, winner of Congressional Medal of Honor: Drake University, for its forthright action in withdrawing from the Missouri Valley Conference because of treatment given Johnny Bright who was injured in football game with Oklahoma A and M; Dwight Palmer, chairman of the Board of General Cable Corporation, for outstanding work in integrating Negroes in industry; Lester B. Granger. executive director of National Urban League, for widening employment opportunities for Negroes and creating better racial understanding in the industrial field; Judge J. Waites Waring, for taking forthright stand constantly in behalf of equal rights for Negroes; Harry T. Moore, Florida NAACP martyr who gave his life for democracy; National Conference of Christians and Jews, for seminar work throughout the country on integration and better race relations. In addition, constant fight against intolerance; Henry Ford, II, using power and resources for promoting better human relations.
