GALVESTON, TEXAS- (SNS)
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Oleander Lodge (No 550) of Colored Elks and several other organizations of Negro citizens voted to sponsor a "pay-your-poll-tax-campaign" during the entire month of January. According to President Harold Shirley of the NAACP the local chapter of the most militant Negro organization in the world will preach the gospel of citizenship through qualifying as VOTERS thereby helping the National organization in its fight for universal Suffrage
VOLUNTEER CORPS
In Texas poll taxes may be paid over a four month period October 1st. through January 31. The NAACP prexy said he had been successful in getting three organizations to furnish him several Volunteer workers to make house-to-house visits the last 10 days of the campaign in an effort to stimulate payment of poll taxes among local colored citizens.
TWO IMPORTANT ELECTIONS
The most important election on the agenda for 1943 is the school trustees election; six weeks later the municipal election will take place In April you will have a chance to do something for your school children who must attend Central at some time or other if they complete high school training in Galveston. The second Tuesday in MAY you will have an opportunity to help restore DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT to your exploited city You have had a foreign form of government for several years You can help CENTRAL and your CITY If you qualify to vote before January 31st, 1943 The records will reveal that 60 percent of the colored voters get their poll taxes the last three or four days in January Don't wait for the last several days. Begin the New Year by becoming a CITIZEN' The cost is only $1.75: surely that isn't too much to pay for the privilege to actually participate in the affairs of your government There is hardly a colored family in Galveston without representation in the armed services: If your sons and kin can fight for DEMOCRACY for strangers, YOU can at least VOTE for Democracy at home
