Commission OK's Improved Bridge And Approaches

The State Highway Commission today announced approval of a project to improve three-tenths of a mile of Route 45 in Farmville, including widening the Appomattox river bridge.

First phase of the construction will include the widening of the bridge to provide a 28-foot roadway and improving approaches adjacent to the structure on both the Prince Edward and Cumberland sides.

The overall project is to include reconstruction of Route 45 for the entire three-tenth of a mile length.

Improvements subsequent to the initial construction will include reconstruction of Route 45 from the Norfolk and Western Railway crossing in Farmville to 100 feet north of Railroad avenue in Cumberland county.

Engineers said the bridge widening and approach highway work is expected to be advertised for bids late this year, or early in 1959.

The Commission's approval came after the body reviewed the transcript of testimony at a public hearing on the project held here August 28. No objections to the project were raised at the hearing.

The Town of Farmville will participate in cost of the project to the extent of $16,000, all of which already has been allocated and established as fund reserves in the 1957-58 and 1958-59 budgets.
